Water Features: The Perfect Yard Addition in 2022
If you’ve perused our blog before, you’ve probably noticed that we love water features. Not only are water features beautiful conversation starters, but they are extremely versatile and can be designed to fit any space, budget, and environment.
What’s better, water features can be a great addition to your yard space if you’re looking for a unique way to elevate it outside of traditional landscaping projects. Don’t get us wrong, though – while there’s something wonderful about a well-planned and well-executed landscaping project, there’s just something about a water feature that gets us really excited!
From bubblers, to waterfalls, to ponds, here are just a few of the ways a water feature can help you elevate your yard this Summer and turn your space into a true Pacific Northwest oasis.
Create a comfortable atmosphere for hosting and hanging
If you like hosting as much as we do during the Summer months, you’re probably way ahead of the curve on getting your backyard entertainment ready (and if you’re not, check out our recent blog for the step-by-step to get ready!), but we bet a water feature could bring your space to the next level.
Water features, especially ones with moving water like bubblers or waterfalls, can help drown out surrounding noise from roads and neighbors and create a quiet, tranquil space (or maybe just provide great background noise for a raging backyard barbecue?). And did you know that a water feature can also help regulate the temperature of your yard, cooling you down on those extra hot Summer days? Pretty cool, if you ask us!
If you’re not a big entertainer, we bet you would still benefit from a quieter and cooler yard space to relax after work or watch your kids and pets enjoy some much-needed Vitamin D!
Make a statement
Our clients always tell us after we help them design and build a water feature how many compliments they get from friends and family who get to enjoy it, and we would have to agree! A stunning waterfall or a unique bubbler really tie together landscaping and are a great conversation starter.
Concerned about space? Even the smallest of yards can accommodate a water feature. What about a tabletop bubbler to accent your patio decor? Or a standing fountain in one of your planter beds? The possibilities are endless, and an experienced landscape designer (like our team at Greenhaven!) can be surprisingly creative when it comes to big ideas in small spaces.
While water features are growing in popularity, especially over the past couple of years, they are still pretty unique and rare to find in the Pacific Northwest, and anyone with a unique feature in their space is bound to be memorable.
Welcome wildlife into your space
With all the growth of our city and surrounding cities in the past decade or so, wildlife has been slowly pushed out of their native habitats, but creating a space that is safe and comfortable for wildlife like birds and butterflies can be both entertaining and beautiful for your family.
If quietly watching wildlife is not your jam, you can also use this as an opportunity to teach your kids about some of the native species we have here in Vancouver – it’s like a nature reserve in your own backyard (literally!).
Worried about unwanted wildlife that is often associated with water features? No need to worry! Adding some koi fish to your pond can help keep pests away, and some animals, like dragonflies, will not only be attracted to your yard but can eat the pests that may be bugging you (ha, get it?).
