We love a good backyard design, but …

When we finally get some sunshine and warmth in the PNW, Washingtonians love to spend as much time as possible outside, so we also spend a ton of time, effort, and money making our backyard into the perfect oasis.

Don’t get us wrong, we love a good backyard design (did someone say waterfall or outdoor kitchen?!), but what about the front yard? The front yard is always a challenge because we don’t use the space as much and it can seem really daunting to design. After all, the front yard is the first space people see when they visit our home, and first impressions are everything.

While it may seem overwhelming, we promise it’s not as difficult as you might think to give your front yard some curb appeal and wow your neighbors, guests, and passersby! So, here are some of the essential things to think about if you’re ready to give your front yard some love before summer is over.

Think beyond traditional landscaping

As important as it is to create beautiful planter beds that add color, texture, and dimension to your space, it’s important to remember that front yard landscape design is about more than just plants and beds!

We encourage you to think beyond traditional landscaping. What about your front porch decor and furniture? Is there an opportunity to spruce up your mailbox? Could you add planter boxes to your front windows? Or a hanging basket?

With a space like a front yard and porch, the possibilities are endless, and adding some unique elements to your space can also add some personality to your home and be an excellent conversation starter, too.

Plant some trees

While trees can make an impact in any type of yard space (back, front, or side!), we think they are particularly interesting and valuable in the front yard.

Not only do trees add some dimension to your landscaping by giving it some height and providing a focal point to the design, but they also make your home seem grander and more established.

In the PNW, not every tree will thrive, but there are a few tree varieties that do really well here that we plant a lot in the yards we design, like cherry blossoms (duh!), apple trees, snowballs, and lilacs. But, make sure you think about how much space you have, how much sun exposure you get, and your soil type before committing to planting something as big as a tree.

Lights: Not just for the holidays anymore

It’s unfortunate that so many people only add lighting to the front of their homes around the holidays because lighting can be an incredible value add to your curb appeal and front yard functionality year-round!

What’s more, you can use lighting in your space in a ton of different ways. For example, adding some in-ground lighting can help your beds shine all night long, and throwing up some string lights can make your home feel bright and welcoming. Even switching out your porch lights or adding some lights to your front walkway can provide an elevated touch.

Add a unique water feature

Last, but certainly not least, think about adding some kind of water feature to your front yard space to make a splash for your curb appeal. We love water features because they are not only beautiful and interesting to look at, but they add a unique texture to your space and can be customized to fit any type of yard, home, or neighborhood.

Adding a simple fountain or bubbler is a great conversation starter for guests who pull up to your home, or you can make an even bigger impact with a waterfall or pond if the space allows. If you’re looking to elevate the look of your home, a water feature is definitely the way to go!
